Working with thousands of people over the years, one thing I have learned and continue to refine is the questions that are asked. In order to spark one’s creativity, we need to tap into our childlike curiosity.
When we are asking ourselves the right questions we get to where we want to go faster.
It’s true, we tend to avoid difficult questions because they can cause us to be uncomfortable or bring up pain that we may have been suppressing for years. Or in most cases we just don’t know what questions to ask in the first place.
First, we must be open to whatever is happening in the moment.
Take a step back and become the observer in your life rather than the participant. Sometimes this can be challenging to do mainly because we are not used to playing this role in our own lives. This is why so many people engage a mentor or a coach to walk them through this process because it is not always easy to observe what they are going through while they are going through it.
Begin by seeing what you are choosing or what you are saying yes to in your life.
What choices have been made?
What dilemma are you faced with at this moment?
Are you experiencing confusion?
For example, a recent client of mine was trying to decide to stay as an employee or go out and start a company that she had dreamed of for years. Until last year she always made the choice to go from job to job for a financial safety net, which satisfied her temporarily, but she always ended up wanting more and wanting to create a business that she loved. She finally made the choice last year in the midst of the pandemic to take that leap of faith. It wasn’t until we started digging deeper by asking the right questions she could begin to see what it was that was holding her back and what choices she was making that were not in alignment with her ultimate dreams.
We get to decide how we want to show up in every situation moment by moment.
Take a moment now and ask yourself how are you showing up to your life?
Are you making decisions or are you spending weeks on end contemplating your choices never really making a firm decision or commitment to anything?
Inquiring deeper helps to unleash our inner creativity. It allows us to see solutions where we only saw problems before. It helps us get focused and clear on what we need to be doing in order to get the results we are seeking. Often we tend to procrastinate, or numb ourselves by suppressing our feelings, self-medicating or distracting ourselves with other less important things.
There is no better time than now to have a serious ‘talk’ with yourself.
You have gathered so many skills and tools along the way to help you make choices and change the trajectory of your life. It is just a matter of developing that courage and leaping onto that new path.
